Objective: to design and manufacture a batch of 15 reformers for a new Universo Pilates studio.

Contribution: Project plan, teardown, suppliers finding, manufacturing planning, assembly coordination, 3D CAD model (SolidWorks), and technical documentation.

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20th century for physical rehabiliatation. One of the classic pieces of equipment used to practice a pilates routine is a reformer.

A Pilates reformer is a specialised piece of exercise equipment used in Pilates to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and overall body control. Unlike mat Pilates, which uses just your body weight, the reformer uses a sliding carriage, springs, ropes, and pulleys to provide resistance and support.

Design process

Faced with the challenge of reducing upfront investment, the client chose to explore local manufacturing rather than sourcing new imported equipment. Our design process began with a detailed teardown, using reverse engineering to understand the intricate components, mechanisms, and systems that would define the new reformers. With these insights, we mapped out opportunities for local sourcing, identifying suppliers and specialised manufacturers who could meet our design requirements. The production strategy was developed collaboratively, with TUUX Studio guiding the assembly and delivery process to ensure that every piece was not only functional but crafted with design integrity, seamlessly translating concept into tangible product.

A renewed classic

To preserve the classic, iconic form, we reimagined the material palette. Replacing hardwood with Russian birch plywood, we introduced a visual contrast between the warm, solid wood front and the layered plywood detailing on the sides, creating a contemporary reinterpretation of the original style. The assembly employed domino joints, intentionally left visible to celebrate craftsmanship and serve as a signature element of TUUX Studio’s design contribution, subtly merging function with aesthetic expression.
